Our Review
Best of Nova, CD Compilation. Subtly subtitled Songs Written by Anna C. Nova. It looked intriguing on the cover, and so it proved out. There was a moment when I thought it might be a chore to listen to; I didn't particularly find the groove for the first cut, Out Of Self Control (Mission To The Moon), which set the expectation for dance electronica. But this was quickly followed up with Much More and No Reasons For Words, a couple of europop flavored tracks that really stood out for me, so much so that I gave them both five stars on the iPod, at least for now.
But the reason for the listen, if not the reason for the season, is Anna C. Nova's Where Is My Santa which turned out to be a massively hook-laden dance number, performed by the 4-woman group Multi, in what I am beginning to understand is the style of this Russian pop label. This song recounts Abba, the Bee Gees, and everything that was good about dance clubs in the '70s. It is full of drum machine beats and synthetic instrumentals, but behind all the hoopla there's a brilliant young vocalist in Multi's Valentina. This is a crazy song, in the best sense of the word. And the remainder of the record is of interest to anyone who loves upbeat electronic dance music.
