Our Review
The Beegie Adair Trio's Jazz Piano Christmas, with its uptempo light jazz treatments of holiday favorites, struck a resonant chord. I was happy to have the opportunity to hear a jazz trio this year, particularly one as versatile as the Beegie Adair Trio. Ms. Adair's arrangements and piano work mesh exquisitely well with Roger Spencer's bass and Chris Brown's drums.
Adair's mellow, moody arrangement of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas produced in me strong feelings of nostalgia and longing for Christmases past. The Little Drummer Boy was also highly evocative and spoke to me with an understated passion, combining an unusual introduction, rhythmic flow, and balance between monochromatic and polychromatic voices to produce a powerful emotional effect.
The effective intermixing of standards with less frequently used selections makes this an essential addition to the library of the serious Christmas music listener. Of particular interest are The Christmas Waltz, What Are You Doing New Year's Eve, and the unexpectedly appropriate final number, When You Wish Upon a Star.
