Our Review

At times toeing the thin boogie woogie line between rockabilly and swing, the Blue Moon Boys bring the season into focus using their own stylistic lens. Every song bears the seductive innocence of their updated version of early rock and roll, at one point even paying homage to Chuck Berry with a spirited Run, Run, Rudolph.

The Boys use every last second on a 74 minute CD, mixing an energetic live performance with several well-planned studio cuts. The two I liked best were O Little Town of Bethlehem featuring Nic Roulette's unique narration, and a stunningly beautiful cover of the Galaxies Christmas Eve, a song I hadn't heard before. But picking favorites I always manage to shortchange other entertaining songs. I liked God Rest Ye Merry Surfpunks, which is the best (perhaps, only) blend of punk tempo and vocals with surf guitar riffs I've heard. A childlike The Most Wonderful Day of the Year and a cornier than corny Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer round out this rolicking ride.

This record is a delight from beginning to end. Party music for that witching hour when your houseful of Christmas revelers are ready to howl, it is also a fine study in Rock & Roll Christmas classics, featuring a little boogie, a little blues, some dandy guitar pickin' and a lot of youthful Christmas innocence.
