Our Review

Tradition, the Burns Sisters ode to the Christmas season, shows what can happen when a major record label puts its resources behind a tremendously talented act, and then lets them perform their art. This inspired work is the product of the creative efforts of Annie, Jeannie, and Marie Burns, and the exquisite production values of Rounder/Philo Records.

The CD begins with a Marie's toe-tapping Songs We Love, a dobro fortified contemporary folk anthem that rivals any original Christmas song I've heard this year. That this clever and upbeat number is immediately followed by the solemn O Come O Come Emmanuel created a contrast that immediately brought tears to my eyes.

The record reaches its climax with Annie Burns' This Christmas, a hopeful and inspiring prayer for world peace. In between the two original Burns Sisters songs are a variety of traditionals, including a surprisingly good folk rendering of Children Go Where I Send Thee.

Everything works on this record.
