Our Review
I could recommend this CD based purely on how unusual a concept Shawn Colvin has realized here. She has mixed holiday songs with lullabies to create a dreamy mixture of sentimental favorites for the child in all of us.
Or I could recommend it based on the unique beauty of Shawn Colvin's voice, as sweet as the best popular singers, as honest as the best folk singers, as vulnerable as Joni Mitchell at her peak. On this CD she gives her listeners a fair sample of her beautiful pop folk style.
But in the end, I'll recommend it for the two songs I fell in love with: Robert Louis Stevenson's Windy Nights, a song that sounded strangely familiar and yet unfamiliar at the same time. Although not, strictly speaking, a Christmas song, this "lullaby" was quite beautiful coming out of the mouth of Shawn Colvin.
Then, she took my breath away with her arrangement of Evening is a Little Boy/The Night Will Never Stay. This song featured the dynamic tempo and vocal surprises I have come to expect from Ms. Colvin.
This CD is not the usual holiday fare. Shawn Colvin has truly made a holiday CD to be enjoyed all year long. Give it a listen!
