Our Review

Famous fiddler Craig Duncan goes to town on Christmas in the Old West: A Cowboy Christmas Collection. Accompanied by some musically talented cowpokes (on guitar, bass, accordion, and harmonica), the album provides a cool country-western context for your holiday favorites.

Christmas in the Old West is an entertaining melange of well-executed instrumentals. The Green Hill label is known for presenting "easy listening for easy living", and this release is no exception. The music is soothing; numbers such as Away in a Manger give the impression of kicking back by the campfire after a long day of rasslin' those little doggies, if you get my drift. The album is relaxing, but still provides a nice charge of western-cowboy fun.

All cuts are familiar friends, except for Thirty Two Feet and Eight Little Tails, a reindeer anthem made popular by Gene Autrey. The execution of White Christmas is particularly fine; I especially enjoyed the guitar solos.

Christmas in the Old West is easy-on-the-ears adult contemporary entertainment for anyone who enjoys a western flair. Get along, little doggies!
