Our Review

Outside the obligatory Silent Night, there was very little I recognized on D. C. Anderson's All is Calm, All is Bright, which is a good thing. In fact, it was full of surprises for my jaded ears. Beginning with a delicate tenor rendering of Jane Siberry's driving, haunting Are You Burning, Little Candle, Anderson guides the listener through a series of beguiling and surprising turns, from the (never-before recorded) swinging Sondheim tune Christmas Island at Christmas Time to the silly Dickens Carolers.

But Anderson's own Christmas song, Hands, was the highlight of the record. Rich in Christmas imagery, Hands is a complex and personal reminiscence written to be performed in Anderson's "native" Broadway style.

This CD is quite complex. It is also, in spite of Anderson's obvious affinity for the holiday season, subtle and understated. This record was crafted by a seasoned seasonal artisan.
