Our Review
Classically elegant, but with Native American sensibilities, Rob Whitesides-Woo contemplates a coolly sedate winter season. I am imagining being snowed in, but well-provisioned. Having the time for serious reflection, time for the mind to run wild and free while the body rests in the warmth of hearth and home.
Apparently taking advantage of both acoustic instruments and electronic mixables, Whitesides-Woo weaves this earthy winter magic with his new composition, the title cut, Winter's Dream. This new song, played early in the CD and reprised at the end, evokes for me the cyclic nature of life. Made to face modern linear time in our modern workd, this music harks back to the annual cycle of nature, focusing attention on winter, the time when our roots drink deep, our limbs rest, and our bodies rejuvenate.
Aside from his new songs, Whitesides-Woo elects to record an entirely Christian set. To these he applies his earth classical treatment, making effective use of Jon Clark's flute, oboe, recorder and English horn. The arrangements are simple, ethereal, and hauntingly delightful.
This, my first experience of Rob Whitesides-Woo, exceeded my expectations.
