Our Review
Yes, I could have taken the easy way out and featured this with the Novelty CD reviews. Certainly, these are the most novel voices I will review this season. And I'll bet their CDs have been placed in the Comedy bin before, so I doubt they'd be too offended.
But more impressive than the novelty of their singing, more interesting than the playfulness of some of their arrangements, more intriguing than the sound effects they so effortlessly add to their vocals, I was appreciative of the complex beauty of their voices.
There is no denying they show enormous versatility and resourcefulness, such as when they "accompanied" themselves with drums, sax, and bass. (I giggled at their antics more than once.) And they went straight for laughs with the apropos Gimme Some Presents and the mighty Big Santa (the Visit).
But I was awed by their harmony on Talk About Sufferin' Here Below, which rivals any sound I've heard this season. Their combined voices on The Coventry Carol gave the impression of cloistered monks singing deep in the catacombs. And they shifted into serious low gear with O Holy Night, where they achieved the sound of an R&B gospel quartet.
It may be that the contrast between serious and silly powered both, but whatever the reason, I enjoyed their sound a lot.
