Our Review

Pipers' Holiday is extraordinary on several levels. First, it is a classical/jazz instrumental blend, driven primarily by two widely-acclaimed flutists (Ervin Monroe & Alexander Zonjic). More than that, they are joined by the outrageously talented Bob James, a prolific smooth jazz expert who provides key piano support on several tracks. Third, the music here is seasonal, but not exclusively so, and its celebratory nature makes the offering eminently replayable throughout the winter months.

Although the flutes are the main stars here, James really does shine; his delicate piano intro on Greensleeves, for example, is killer stuff. In fact, the interplay between piano and flutes throughout the track makes it my favorite on the album. Absolutely brilliant!

The song selection on Pipers' Holiday combines seasonal titans like Silent Night with aseasonal beauties such as 'Rameau' Tambourin and an original gem (Bob James' own Northwoods Carol, evoking birds in the forest through playful flute exchanges). Although the overall tone feels more classical than jazz-based, the jazzy flavors make the ambiance light and bright.

Keep in mind that Pipers' Holiday was first released in 1995; its staying power speaks volumes about the classic professionalism and marvelous musicality that run rampant throughout the offering. Enjoy classical music with jazzy undertones? Appreciate first-rate flute playing, especially when a jazz pianist like Bob James is a supporting player? Then you've found yourself an A-1 pick for the upcoming holiday season! Enjoy!
