Our Review
Roberto Perera ushers in the holiday season with a snappy set of latin-flavored favorites. Featured on Paraguayan harp, Perera is accompanied by a strong ensemble of musicians, including Juan Areco, guitars and banjo, Abel Pabon, piano and keyboards, Archie Peña and Rafael Solano, percussion, and Nicky Orta, bass.
Their sound ranges from Carribean calypso to Brazilian pop. While they play faithful arrangements of traditionals, I liked their two unlikely inclusions. La Peregrinacion, was a moody piece, displaying Spanish, Brazilian and Europop sensibilities. Niña Lindo is a toe-tapping Spanish number, which they followed up with a sweet, sentimental Silver Bells. Every song is different, and several are quite unusual and intriguing.
Christmas Fantasies is warm and musical, and features some nice ensemble musicianship.
