Our Review
It is with great pleasure that I begin the 1998 Christmas season (in September!) by featuring the beautiful acoustic guitar work of Ed Gerhard. Known far and wide as a year 'round Christmas junkie and long-time collector of Christmas music, I am nevertheless surprised and abashed to have received so many wonderful Christmas surprises so early in the holiday season. Even before Labor Day comes Ed Gerhard's six string, twelve string, high strung and slide guitars down my chimney with a rush of wintry air that all but extinguishes the flame of a Texas summer!
I find myself inspired and enraptured by the sweet, clear tones of Gerhard's music. His arrangements are straightforward and unpretentious. His selections are traditional favorites--from Joy to the World to Little Drummer Boy. His style and craft on the guitar, his attention to appropriate arrangements, and his obvious joy in making the music combine to create a masterful cornucopia of acoustic delight.
I particularly enjoyed White Christmas, which reminded me of the Hawaiian slack-key artists who have so enthralled me. Coming not quite on the heels of his prior holiday release Christmas (Virtue, 1991), Gerhard's artistry on the guitar and faithful renderings of Christmas favorites make On a Cold Winter's Night a beautiful gift.
