Our Review
I get the blues every year when Christmastime rolls around: the record review blues. But not when I listen to Peter Green and the Men in Blue. Their brand of blues perked me right up, because this little blues record really rocks.
Sure, I hear B. B. King and shades of Muddy Waters. But what rang truer for me were those great blues-influenced rockers--Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZ Top, and Jimi Hendrix. This band covers some of best licks of the latter half of the 20th Century. But that isn't all.
It also features new music--organist Brian Moran's song Christmas Always Shines, one of the best cuts I've heard this year. Listening to his song reminded me a little bit of Little Feat. There was also the Muddy-esque title cut penned by drummer Neil Burgett and Green, himself. And if that's not enough, there's Green's Georgia Peaches Blues, the bluest song on the record.
These guys pay homage to the blues, but they have the hearts of rockers. There are a lot of good licks on this record and spiffy arrangements. I recommend this one for blues aficionados, for rockers, and for my buddy Francis over at mistletunes.com.
