Our Review

Canadian Holly Cole has a tremendous jazz voice, and I cannot imagine why she does not enjoy more renown in the good ol' United States. Her sound is smoke and sunshine, sultry but innocent, and incredibly flexible. At times, she projects a raspy growl not unlike Macy Gray (but not so weird); at other times, Cole is classic cabaret. To be honest, Cole truly reminds me of jazz giant Sarah Vaughan. It is difficult to imagine a jazz/pop instrument more capable than Holly Cole's exceptional voice.

Cole's Baby, It's Cold Outside was originally released in 2001; it's being reissued this year and will hopefully find a strong audience. The offering certainly deserves one. This is sophisticated adult contemporary jazz/pop fare of the highest order. Cole swings here with long-time associates Aaron Davis (piano) and David Pilch (bass), and enjoys great support from a host of other talented musicians, including a small orchestra for some tracks. For me, the coolest cut is Sleigh Ride, which features just "the voice" and Piltch's bass. The shifting tempos, the excellent elasticity of Cole's voice, the bass-driven horse hooves, and the intensely-creative arrangement make the entire package a delight. Not surprisingly, Cole masterfully manages jazz holiday standards like the title number Baby, It's Cold Outside (with the excellent Ed Robertson from Barenaked Ladies) and 'Zat You Santa Claus.

If you are unfamiliar with the fabulous Holly Cole, Baby, It's Cold Outside presents a golden opportunity. Invite this Canadian to your home this holiday season. Be careful, though; once you get to know her, you may never want Holly Cole to leave.
