Our Review
After my first run-in with "Jugabilly" music, I felt a bit ravished by this Tour de Farce--perpetrated by none other than Dan Hicks and cohorts too numerous to mention. These fellows try to cover the entire holiday map, delivering everything from soup to nuts, and along the way swinging their way through a number of old and new holiday chestnuts.
What I liked best about this record--and there is a lot to like about this record-- is the amount of new and seriously-reworked material. Austin deLone's Santa Don't Do It rap should get air play in December. It is a very clever piece. And deLone's Waitin for Santa Claus swings.
The Jug Band also does good with Daddy's Drinkin Up Our Christmas, a song made famous by Lance Dickerson when he was (an original) with Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen.
Of Course, anything featuring Dan Hicks is going to swing. Nobody is likely to play Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas like Dan!
This is a very fun record. These guys don't take themselves or the Christmas season too seriously, and they have done a great job conveying a goofy merriment that me and mine will be listening to through December 25.
