Our Review
This CD was a pleasant and dramatic change of pace: eventually, even I tire of listening to Silent Night. I know very little about Klezmer music, a music which originated in the eastern European Jewish communities of the 18th and 19th centuries, but which was influenced by a number of ethnic cultures of that area. Much of the music on this CD reminded me of what I have previously classified as Gypsy music.
I enjoyed the music on this CD, a music laden with traditional strains of violin, clarinet and tambourine. I also enjoyed the CD's documentary nature. Intertwined with the songs are stories and reminiscences--in strong Yiddish accents--of the origins of Hanukkah and of cultural and family Hanukkah traditions.
Performed by the Klezmer Conservatory Band, this CD attempts to recapture the essential sounds of Klezmer. I'm not qualified to comment on how well they achieve their goal, but I did enjoy listening to the music.
