Our Review
Two years ago, I reviewed a nifty instrumental album entitled A Flute Tootin' Yule, and one of the featured players there was the talented Karen Smith, the very same flutist who makes beautiful music with pianist David Snyder on O Holy Night. Piano and flute, flute and piano, these two classy and artful instruments "play nice" to make O Holy Night a holiday highlight.
O Holy Night opens with the brightly shining Angels We Have Heard on High; first, the piano takes the laboring oar, and then the flute does its fair share. In fact, this album does represent a genuine partnership; if you are a fan of either instrumental piano or flute, you will be doubly pleased here.
The relaxed classical stylings are uplifting, comforting, and refreshing all at once. The dozen Christmas pieces are old friends rejuvenated by creative and tasteful arrangements. The selection Three Carols in 6/8 Time (Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella; The Wassail Song; I Saw Three Ships) is a magical mystery tour, and the total package is much more beautiful than the technical name. The tender presentation of Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming brought a lump to my throat, the rolling, multi-layered We Three Kings of Orient Are is Mannheim Steamrolleresque, and the cascading piano framework for Smith's amazing flute on Gesu Bambino is sweet match. The closing Christmas Carol Suite bursts with playful energy; it's a satisfying conclusion to a very fine release.
I must say a few words about the album's excellent cover art (by Cheryl Goettemoeller). The lovely design is a variation of Vincent van Gogh's "Starry Night," and its swirling presentation matches the timeless beauty of the CD's musical contents.
Thank you, Karen Smith & David Snyder, for combining flute and piano into such a superb holiday duet.
