Our Review

Having entertained audiences in the San Francisco Bay area for many years, Mark Russo showcases his impressive musical talents in Season's Silhouette, a lovely instrumental CD that has a distinct new age flavor and a saxophone soul. Russo's earlier holiday album (Instrumental Christmas) is also reviewed on this site and, like a twin sibling, shares many superb traits.

Russo's background is in both classical and jazz, and this experience provides an excellent foundation for his new age release. Season's Silhouette presents ten tracks; these are largely traditional ancient carols and three originals (Russo's "Canon for Mary", and Russo/Etheredge's "A Morning's Offering," and "Soliloquy for Peace"). The originals are well crafted and a natural fit for the holiday season; I especially liked the delightful English horn conversations in "Canon for Mary." Of the traditional numbers, my personal favorite was "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming" with its syncopated rhythms and bongo beat.

This album is all about ambiance, and the ambiance is both comfortable and sophisticated. This is not new age music from outer space; some new age albums are almost synthesized out of existence. Instead, Season's Silhouette is perfect for the music lover who truly knows and appreciates great musicianship. It generally leans more towards classical than jazz, and the small ensembles (2-4 players) provide a warm, intimate environment. The music is lovely--the perfect setting for just about any holiday activity.

Wonderful! Season's Silhouette will cast captivating shadows across your holiday hearth when the snow flies this winter.
