Our Review
Defying easy classification, Melinda Caroll's A World of Peace is at once a record filled with sweet contemporary pop vocals reminiscent of Karen Carpenter, and at the same time a rich, renaissance folk record. Filled with lush, percussive arrangements and Ms. Caroll's splendid voice, this is the CD one would surely want to hear on December 23, just as the anticipation of Christmas begins to peak.
The arrangements were fresh and novel throughout. But my favorite was the pop arrangement of Children Go Where I Send Thee, among the most difficult songs to perform. I liked the slightly syncopated beat and Ms. Caroll's confident and almost bluesy way of belting out the lyrics, on a song I've more often heard other artists perform in a slow, more stilted way. Her performance gave me new insight into the beauty of this song.
I also liked the title track, composed by Melinda Caroll. A beautiful flight of hopeful imagination, A World of Peace is a fitting tribute to all of our hopes for the world, its words paying tribute to the season of peace as self-fulfilling cause and effect.
Melinda Caroll's A World of Peace is a delightfully melodious ode to the season of the Prince of Peace.
