Our Review
This recording was surprising not so much for its use of the bagpipes as how it featured them without allowing them to dominate. It flowed rather like a very versatile choir with two or three featured voices--the voices of three pipers ensconced in a variety of popular Celtic, Reggae (Reggae?), and contemporary orchestrations.
Yes, I must admit I was smitten by the novel arrangement of Jingle Bells Reggae, because it was fun and unexpected. Not having much experience listening to pipes beyond hearing my neighbor practicing in the park as I jog by, I suppose I thought the arrangements would be traditional and severe, an overpowering call to arms. Quite the opposite. These pipers--Mathieson, Ross, and Roy--augment and complete the moods conveyed in David Pringle's arrangements. In fact, I could have stood even more piping than I heard.
I tended to like the more traditional arrangements best: I was particularly enthusiastic about the quietly inspiring Child in a Manger and the tenderly reverent Love Came Down at Christmas.
Featuring a variety of styles and exceedinly crisp arrangements, there is something here for everyone.
