Our Review
I listen to a program called Folkways on KUT in Austin, Texas. Each December, for as long as I can clearly remember, I have begun my holiday preparations listening to the sound of Peter Rowan's version of Christmas Time's A-Coming. Hearing this song completes the annual cycle for me. What a treat to find it on this excellent Sugar Hill compilation.
From Tim & Mollie Obrien's plaintive Christ Was Born in Bethlehem, to the Seldon Scene's Silent Night, the thirteen selections run the folk, bluegrass, and gospel gamut. The Bluegrass Cardinals managed to surprise me with one I hadn't heard: a country and western tearjerker called The Carpenter Shop. Red Knuckles & the Trailblazers go heavy on the western with a toe-tapping That White Christmas Song. And the incomparable Dan Crary performs his delightful version of What Child Is This.
Apparently not lacking for talented artists, Sugar Hill mixes its best ingredients into a sweet holiday dessert.
