Our Review
Robert Mosci is an extraordinordinarily versatile singer, reminding me of the pop James Taylor one minute, jazzy Harry Connick, Jr., the next, with a little bit of R&B Barry White thrown in from time to time for good measure. On Holidays his voice is embedded in some really extravagant orchestral arrangements, the most impressive of which is his composition "Holidays Are Here Again", a song that manages to capture and convey the childlike wonder of Christmas. I liked its bouyant melody and over-articulated instrumentals.
His other new song, "Chanukah", is more subdued, with klezmer saxophone riffs doing most of the heavy lifting in his wistful arrangement. Every song has a slightly different signature, from jazz, to folk, to R&B, to pop. In the final analysis, Holidays plays out as an almost old-fashioned big band record, with Mosci doing a much more than adequate job as band leader, taking some risks and making a unique pop music statement on some of the most interesting arrangements I've heard in weeks.
