Our Review

Ride 'em, cowboy! One glance at the cover of Snow, and you know that Royal Wade Kimes ("RWK") is one bodacious buckaroo. RWK is riding horseback in heavy snow, wearing a handsome Stetson, a major moustache, and the most serious expression. What is he thinking about? Getting the cattle in before the big blizzard? Finding a cozy saloon where he can tip a frosty brew? RWK's not telling! Named spokesperson for National Day of the Cowboy, RWK spearheads that organization's efforts to create a national holiday honoring the cowboys' contributions to American history and culture. Now THAT'S a serious cowboy!

RWK's Snow contains ten tracks, all holiday favorites except for his original "Mistletoe." This country album is upbeat, but respectful, and features RWK's rich, deep voice and his five-person band (largely guitars, piano/organ, and drums). The artist croons with a slight, steady vibrato, bringing great texture to the tunes. My favorite cuts are Willie Nelson's wonderful "Pretty Paper" and RWK's own "Mistletoe," a breezy number with a catchy melody and sweet lyrics: "Kiss me once, kiss me twice, it don't matter 'bout naughty or nice!"

This is one fine holiday album. My only complaint is that the trail ride ends too soon. Under 30 minutes of music? Geez, Wade, I barely warmed my saddle before I had to slide off the horse! Next time, please deliver enough tracks to take me and my appaloosa over the horizon!
