Our Review

We do get repeat business at Christmasreviews.com. One such is the Arizona Repertory Singers, who first registered on our radar in 1998 with the impressive Sweet Was the Song.

My impression of Christmas at San Xavier was that the recording did not really hit its stride until about one-quarter of the way in, or maybe I'm just not a fan of the latin stuff. After a moving performance of I Wonder as I Wander, the remainder of the recording was a series of highlights--Coventry Carol sticks with me, along with the poignant Ya Viene La Vieja--climaxed by the always show-stopping Ave Maria (wait, is that latin?) and encoring with Silent Night.

The Arizona repertory Singers is a non-profit group of the Tucson community's finest singers. Founded in 1984, the ensemble performs primarily a cappella choral music from a range of eras and styles. It has performed all over Arizona, the Southwest, Canada, and Europe.

Jeffry A. Jahn has conducted the ARS since 1989. Jahn holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of Arizona, a Master of Music in vocal performance from Wichita State University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Bethany College in Kansas. He is Director of Worship Arts at Fountain of Life Lutheran Chruch in Tucson, an accomplished tenor soloist and musical arranger.

Since the first concert in 1985, the Arizona Repertory Singers Christmas concerts at Mission San Xavier del Bac have become a Tucson tradition. Over the years, ARS' benefit performances have raised thousands of dollars for the preservation of the mission. Proceeds from the sale of this CD help to support the ongoing restoration of the mission.
