Our Review

Singer-songwriter Steve Mason presents pleasing pop/folk music in the James Taylor vein. His upbeat Open for the Holidays showcases "seasonal songs of celebration, healing and hope," and these include two traditional numbers and five Mason originals. Unfortunately, the album does not stay open very long; the music slides to a stop after only 24 minutes.

Mason's vocal talents and creative abilities are a winning combination. Possessing an easy-going, boy-next-door voice that is pure and bright, Mason exudes sweet, jazzy undertones on tracks like the opening Little Drummer Boy, which is also my favorite cut. Fortunately, the liner notes provide the lyrics for Mason's holiday originals, making it possible to track these short stories word for word. His first two carry a water theme; Mason presumably finds himself on Island Time when the holidays roll around, and he also wants the sweetest rain to Wash Over You, washing away pain and loss. Since my family experienced a death just days ago, the latter sentiment hits home with special force, and we look forward to finding the sun once again. The title number reflects the same spiritual foundation, suggesting that our hearts should be Open for the Holidays and perhaps for the entire year. This offering closes very well with the best Mason original, Thank you for. This emotive number embodies a sweet lyricism that had me repeatedly replaying the cut and humming along.

Open for the Holidays is simple, sweet, and straight-from-the-heart. Thank you, Steve Mason.
