Our Review
Tired of the same-old, same-old? Want to rock your world, Ukrainian style? Well, not "rock," but certainly Ukrainian. Rejoice is the product of two Canadian choirs (Vesnivka Choir and Toronto Ukrainian Male Chamber Choir) under the talented direction of Halyna Kvitka Kondracki. The women's choir (Vesnivka) presents approximately 40 voices across four parts; the smaller men's ensemble totals 14 voices (tenors and basses). A modest orchestra provides excellent support, although the instrumentation on rare occasion overshadows the voices a bit. The cello (Laura Jones) is particularly fine (just listen to Christ Sat Down to Supper).
For most of us, this is completely unfamiliar territory; even so, this uncharted ground is rich with melodic inspiration. The Ukrainian folk songs are gentle spirits, and the choirs provide smooth, seamless interpretations. The music is sung in Ukrainian, and the tunes are not recognizable, but the presentation is universally joyful in a low-key, lovely way. The Stars Shone from Heaven is especially lovely, and the fast-paced, syncopated Carolers is a high-stepping delight. The men's voices are put to superb use in Shchedrivka, providing a mesmerizing undercurrent.
These Ukrainian folk tunes have superb replay value throughout the year; after all, these are not your average holiday melodies. If you are open to world music excitement that is refreshingly different and bursting with well-executed musicality, then invite the Vesnivka Choir (& the Toronto Ukrainian Male Chamber Choir) into your home this holiday season. Keep in mind that if you enjoy vocal music of every stripe, you can find unusual albums like these--sometimes difficult to locate on more general online retail sites--on www.singers.com. Rejoice!
