Our Review

The Vocal Majority (VM) is perhaps the world's most impressive amateur vocal group. This all-male ensemble (of well over 100 voices) is renowned for its classic a cappella barbershop style and holiday music presentations (see other VM offerings reviewed on this site). "White Christmas," however, is a little different than the rest. A cappella purists should be forewarned; most of the tracks on "White Christmas" have orchestration. In this respect, the album emphasizes light-hearted pop production over the unadorned voice. Depending on your personal preferences, that's either good news or not.

This album, like all VM productions, reflects excellent musicality and wonderful harmonies. It's way too short (just 30 minutes), but the song selections are terrific. All ten tracks are well-known gems, mostly modern holiday offerings. The best cuts include the "It's Beginning to Look (a Lot) Like Christmas/Pine Cones and Holly Berries" medley; the Acoustix handle the "Pines Cones" portion with aplomb, layering that song over the VM's "It's Beginning to Look (a Lot) Like Christmas"--terrific harmonies result! The husband-wife team of Steve and Wendy DeCrow also make exceptionally beautiful music (and superb chemistry) together in "Baby, It's Cold Outside." Finally, Jeff Oxley's bass solo on "I Wonder As I Wander" is truly superb.

The VM's "White Christmas" is a fine pop album for the holidays.
